Sustainable development and circular economies

Sustainable development is a topic of great current importance and of great impact for businesses and the economy of the region. Through the adoption of innovative business models, it is possible to achieve significant savings in terms of cost, image, environmental protection and energy and production efficiency. To date, however, the necessary investments required by these models have been met with barriers to their implementation, due to the lack of an appropriate managerial culture and lack of managerial knowledge that has created difficulties in adopting such new business models.

Within this area of study circular economies have taken on a particular importance, i.e. those production models that go beyond the traditional, consumption-waste-disposal (linear economy) approach, towards a production-consumption-recycling/renewable, pattern (circular economy).

The circular model requires businesses to adopt ‘disruptive’ technologies and business models, based on longevity, renewability, recycling, repair, upgrading, the sharing of knowledge and disposal. This implies that businesses must abandon the traditional logic based solely on cost cuts and begin to rethink not only their own products / services, but also stakeholder relationships.
